COLLABORATION
Save Our Children Project Collaborates with over 300 Bay Area Children's Services Organizations
At the core of our work is an ethic of partnership. We understand that working in tandem with other children's services organizations strengthens the entire community.

This understanding led Save Our Children Project founder Clarence White to invest in the creation, publication, and distribution of our Resource Guide to Children's Service in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Resource Guide is a comprehensive, user-friendly listing of essential children's services.

After months of work during which Save Our Children Project staff members connected with children's services agencies located throughout all 5 Bay Area counties, the Resource Guide was divided for reference both by County & Service.

Following that, staff members continued to work with those hundreds of organizations listed to confirm that the information in the guide was accurate, up-to-date, and easy access for the diverse cross-section of individuals/groups that might use the guide. The agencies listed were happy to work together with Save Our Children Project and excited to have such a valuable resource to fill the information gap both for the organizations and for their clients.

EDUCATION
Save Our Children Project Encourages Summer Literacy
Free Books in the Park

Save Our Children Project is clear that literacy is one of the number determining factors in the educational success of a child. We are giving books to children in response. Our kick-off event happened the weekend following the last day of school in collaboration with deFremery Recreation Center and Grieving Mothers On a Mission.

Bernadine Howell, pictured left, chose Girlwood by Claire Dean for 8 year old granddaughter and Old MacNoah Had An Ark by Sally Lloyd-Jones for  her 4 year old grandson. Also pictured left, 16 year old Coreline England happily chose the fantasy/adventure Dingo by Charles de Lint.

California  4th grade reading scores determine the number of jail cells planned as those 4th graders become adults, says Paul Schwartz.*

We want to ensure that more children are prepared as readers before and after the 4th grade. Save Our Children Project encourages literacy to support our children both in expanding their critical thinking skills and opening their imaginations to what is possible as they learn about people and places that may be foreign to them. In addition, children who read well are better equipped handle every area of their education.

To this end, the books we shared included authors from diverse backgrounds writing about worlds and experiences far beyond the corner of
18th and Adeline. Perhaps one of the young
readers we touched will someday write their own book exploring life in West Oakland, where the book giveaway took place, which a child in another part of the world can read to broaden their understanding of the world.

Young father Nova, pictured right, with his rap partner in the group Not By Sight was thrilled to pick up books for his 14 year old daughter and 2 year old son. He brought home the book M+O 4EVR by Tonya Hegamin which explores race and color as experienced by two teen siblings. For his son he chose the lighthearted Harriet Dancing by Ruth Louise Symes.

After receiving the gifts for his family from Save Our Children Project, Nova went on to perform uplifting rap music to a captivated crowd at the Grieving Mother's on a Mission children's memorial event in the park.

*At the website www.essentialschools.com Paul Schwartz from the US Department of Education is quoted as saying that California will use the failure rate among 4th grade readers to determine how many jail cells to build in the decades that follow. A correlation is being drawn between illiteracy and the likelihood of incarceration.
