Save Our Children Project Gave Away Free Books in the Park,
While Children and Parents Expressed Gratitude!

In collaboration with deFremery Recreation Center, Friends of the Oakland Public Library, and Grieving Mother's on a Mission, Save Our Children Project gave out nearly 100 free books to children at deFremery park on June 13th, 2009. The effort was targeted toward young people to encourage them to continue growing as young readers. Save Our Children Project scheduled this Summer literacy kick-off event to coincide with the weekend following the last day of school. Twins,Mia and Alliyah, pictured above right, were very excited about one of the two books they received, The Lonsome Puppy by Yoshitomo Nara.
A young father, pictured left center, was happy to pick up books for his two daughters and other young people in his family. He recently reported back to Save Our Children Project saying, "We've already read all the books!"

Local Mom Roxie, pictured above left, with her 4 year old son Anyo thanked Save Our Children Project for its presence at the very serious children's memorial event put on by Grieving Mother's on a Mission. She was excited to see books available for a broad range of ages. Anyo picked out, The Cow Goes Moo! by Ellen Slusky Weinstein.
Pictured right, an older sister helped the younger to choose two books to expand their activities over the Summer!
Even our Board Members joined in the fun! Pictured left, board member Janie Young-Chaumette brought in three young learners who found books that were perfect for their interests and reading abilities.
We were very excited to see so many young boys and girls, of all ages, delighted by the opportunity to choose from a diverse selection of books from bedtime stories to science fiction.
We noticed that the older children, grades 4 and above were looking for a challenge and often picked out books for their complexity.
The younger kids chose books based on the characters on the covers, the colors, and the size of the book itself. It seemed that the smaller the child was, the bigger the book they wanted!

16-Year-Old National Scholar to Washington DC !

Pictured Above: 16 Year Old Oakland Technical High School Junior and National Scholar, Muhammad Shareef
Oakland Technical High School Junior, Muhammad Shareef is nominated as a National Scholar, having maintained an A average for most of his junior high and high school career. Because of his long-standing academic success, he’s been invited to represent the State of California at the annual National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington DC. Muhammad lives in the heart of West Oakland. He's balances his life as a popular football player with academics. He's even fluent in Arabic.
Muhammad credits his mother, Roma, for teaching him the importance of education and modeling a strong work ethic.
“My mother taught me everything I know about work. Watching her work so hard
for me, I just wanted to work hard too.” -Muhammad Shareef

Pictured Above: Muhammad and his mom Roma.
Roma, a transplant from Sudan, is successfully raising four boys while attending Mills College on a full scholarship. Mother and son will graduate together in 2010. However, money is tight, and the family cannot afford the near $3000 cost for Shareef to attend the conference and represent the State.
